The Present Tense

Verbs in Present Tense have different endings depending on the person or thing that is acting in the sentence. You must learn the different endings in order to form correct sentences in German.
Here is what you need to do when you look up a verb in the dictionary:

Step 1: take off the ending -en     example: spiel  en
Step 2: replace the -en with the following endings, always bringing them in agreement with the agent of the sentence:

ich spiele                    I play
du spielst                   you play
er/sie/es spielt           he/she/it plays
wir spielen                 we play
ihr spielt                     you (pl) play
sie spielen                 they play

The ‘Words of the Day’ give you multiple examples for how to apply and use the Present Tense endings.
