Separable Verbs: Perfect Tense and Future Tense

When using Separable verbs in the Perfect Tense, the past participle can usually be formed by adding the prefix to the past participle of the verb.

Separable verb            Past Participle
abwaschen                   abgewaschen               (washed up)
abtrocknen                  abgetrocknet                (dried the dishes)
aufstehen                     aufgestanden               (got up)
aufwachen                   aufgewacht                   (woken up)
herunterladen             heruntergeladen         (downloaded)

Beispiel:
Ich habe gestern Abend abgewaschen.
Last night I washed the dishes.
Mein Freund hat Musik vom Internet heruntergeladen.
My friend downloaded music from the internet.
Er ist erst um 11 Uhr aufgewacht.
He only woke up at 11 am.

In the Future Tense the separable verb does not split up but stays in its infinitive form.

Beispiel:
Ich werde morgen abwaschen.
Tomorrow I will wash the dishes.
Meine Schwester wird einen Film von iTunes herunterladen.
My sister will download a movie from iTunes.
Wir werden gegen 19 Uhr mit dem Zug ankommen.
We are going to arrive at 7 pm by train.

Separable Verbs

Some German verbs are called Separable verbs as they can be separated into two parts, a prefix and the main verb. Most prefixes are prepositions. Have a look at the list below with common prefixes:

Prefix
Verb
Separable verb
ab
waschen (to wash)
abwaschen (to wash up)
an
kommen (to come)
ankommen (to arrive)
auf
stehen (to stand)
aufstehen (to get up)
aus
ziehen (to pull)
ausziehen (to undress)
ein
steigen (to climb)
einsteigen (to get in)
herunter
laden (to load)
herunterladen (to download)
um
tauschen (to swap)
umtauschen (to exchange)

If the separable verb is the first or only verb in a sentence or clause, the two elements separate.

Separable verb            Clause
abwaschen                   Ich wasche nach dem Essen ab.
aufstehen                     Er steht jeden Tag um 7Uhr auf.
ausziehen                     Wir ziehen morgen aus der Wohnung aus.
herunterladen             Ich lade oft Videos von iTunes herunter.

If the separable verb is the second verb in a sentence as for instance as part of the Future tense, it does not split up. This also happens when you use modal verbs such as müssen (to have to), wollen (to want to), sollen (to be supposed to), etc.

Modal verb                 Clause
müssen                        Ich muss heute abtrocknen.
wollen                         Sie wollen das T-Shirt umtauschen.
können                        Er kann in den Bus einsteigen.
